(C) Niederhorn – Hohwald – Waldegg

  • Start: mountain station Niederhorn
  • Destination: Waldegg car park
  • Hiking time: 3 hours
  • Distance: 10 km
  • Altitude difference: 750 m

Note:

  • This trail is not regarded as a regular sledge run, and is therefore not checked in the evening. Many people use sledges on the downhill parts of the trail, however. It should be noted that the path further below, close to the village, is not always covered in snow.

This is the longest and most attractive winter hiking trail on the Niederhorn. At an altitude of 2,000 metres above sea level, you hike 500 metres along the ridge eastwards towards Burgfeld. This stretch is absolutely free of danger,  with a level area leading to the rear, and has been well prepared by piste vehicles. You have a wonderful view on both sides: the Justis valley extends to your left, while the Bernese Alps are enthroned above the deep-blue of Lake Thun on the right. A small pine forest stands above the tree line, and looks like something out of a fairy tale with fresh snow.
There now follows a short but steep  descent into an almost windless depression. You are still above the tree line and can take a short break to enjoy the relatively mild temperatures and the panoramic view including the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau triumvirate.
From here, the winter hiking trail leads over a short, steep climb to the Oberburgfeld cabin (public toilet available). There are benches on the south side where you can relax, once again with a fantastic view over the forest and onto the Bernese Oberland.
The paths now traces an S-curve down into the valley, and although rather steep, has been well-prepared. You then meet the first groups of trees and hike a short distance through the snow-covered forest. You will then reach  Burgfeld Unterberg, where there is a public toilet next to a cabin. Half of this winter hike has now been completed.
You can enjoy a view over part of the village of Waldegg from the cabin, and you can see in the direction of Interlaken and Wilderswil, with the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau rise into the sky before you. From here, a flat road leads further to Chüematte, and you continue through the forest for a good half-hour. From time to time, a view to the south opens up through lighter areas. Arriving at the Chüematte, you will see an Alpine cabin in a level position, where refreshments are on offer on fine Sundays. Information about this can be obtained from the Beatenberg Station or using the following phone number: +41 (0)33 841 08 41.
From the Chüematte, the winter hiking trail leads lightly down into the valley in the direction of Hohwald, leading to the Hohwald ski-lift mountain station.
The path now leads more steeply downwards through open Alpine meadows with a marvellous view of Beatenberg, part of the lake and the Niesen. You can also look back towards the Niederhorn. Once you arrive in the village of Waldegg, you will find a number of restaurants and the Post bus, which will bring you to Beatenberg railway station or to Interlaken.
